Domestic Violence in the Affluent Community
Course Summary:
Course Overview: In this course, students will learn about a hidden population of domestic violence victims and perpetrators: affluent professionals. We will discuss common behaviors, characteristics and tactics of a typical affluent abuser, along with ways in which survivors are impacted by the abuse, especially with regard to the way they present before court and law enforcement officials. We will explore ways in which affluent perpetrators of domestic violence use their skills, knowledge and credentials to coerce and control. We'll examine ways in which they transfer the abuse from home into the legal area and explore some of the more subtle forms of abuse that occur in affluent communities with a particular focus on technological, financial and psychological abuse. Jackie Campbell's Danger Assessment tool will be reviewed within the context of a case study to help identify red flags signaling potential lethality. There will also be a description of a trauma-informed approach modeled after the Pathway to Violence to encourage domestic violence victims' participation and cooperation in the legal system.
