JUVENILE SUBSTANCE ABUSE

Course Summary:
This course will start with a quick overview of adolescent development and brain development. Participants will learn why substances are so much more harmful and addiction more entrenched when started in adolescence. Participants will learn how to connect with a teen vs an adult offender and gain probation compliance. Participants will learn the risk factors that lead to juvenile substance abuse and dependence. Cases involving the ACE study will be discussed and Dr. Nadine Burke's Hunter's Point study. Participants will learn the biopsychosocial factors of addiction. Working with the family when supervising a substance abusing juvenile as well as using a strength based approach will be discussed. Using lots of film examples class members will learn how to keep juveniles engaged. Lots of online and local resources will be provided.
Performance Objectives
1. Explain to another why substances are so much more harmful and addiction more entrenched when started in adolescence.
2. know how to connect with a teen vs an adult offender regarding their substance abuse issues and gain probation compliance.
3. Identify and explain the risk factors that lead to juvenile substance abuse and dependence.
4. Understand how trauma contributes to addiction and how the ACE study and ACE test can help in the recovery process with juveniles.
5. Utilize tools, knowledge and resources gained in class to use a strength based approach supporting juveniles overcoming addiction while compiling with probation,
