Trauma-informed Client Management
Cert. Number: 4561-042405

Supervising clients who have been severely traumatized can be particularly challenging. Symptoms and reactions to past trauma(s) can distort reality for these individuals and interfere with probation compliance. In this comprehensive course identification, evaluation and intervention of trauma is examined.
The Adverse Childhood Experiences (CDC) study found correlations between trauma in the background of an individual and later criminality. This course addresses the findings of the ACE study and how officers can put this information to use with the offenders on their caseload.
From the ACE Study, "Results indicated that the offender group reported nearly four times as many adverse events in childhood than an adult normative sample. Eight of ten events were found at significantly higher levels among the criminal population.  Childhood adversity is associated with adult criminality. We suggest that to decrease criminal recidivism, treatment interventions  must focus on the effects of early life experiences."

This course specifically addresses the different types of trauma affecting offenders.
These include:
•    interpersonal violence
•    rape
•    stranger physical assault
•    partner battery
•    family violence
•    early childhood trauma (physical, sexual, emotional/mental)
•    natural disaster
•    war trauma
•    torture
Participants learn to differentiate between trauma symptoms and disorders, (such as PTSD, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Depression).
Participants gain knowledge of common maladaptive coping mechanisms used by those with a trauma history as well as trauma trigger that can cause self destructive behavior.. They will learn of the direct relationship between trauma and suicidality and how to assess for suicidality in a traumatized individual.
Participants will be able to describe how these contribute to offender’s criminal behavior and later difficulty with probation orders.
Participants will be given screening tools with which to assess their clients for trauma and instructed on how to use this information to gain better compliance. Local treatment resources will be provided.
